Hardwood Options for Custom Drawer Boxes

At Western Dovetail, wood selection is a critical part of drawer performance, appearance, and longevity. Different hardwood species offer distinct characteristics in strength, grain pattern, color, and stability. We stock and work with a wide range of domestic and specialty hardwoods so cabinetmakers can choose the right material for each application.
All hardwood drawer boxes are precision milled, carefully graded, and joined using dovetail construction to ensure consistent quality and long-term durability.

Hard Maple

Hard Maple is our most commonly used hardwood and the industry standard for high-quality drawer boxes.
  • Dense, strong, and highly wear-resistant
  • Fine, consistent grain with a clean, light appearance
  • Excellent performance with undermount and side-mount hardware
  • Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-use cabinetry
Hard maple offers the best balance of strength, stability, and appearance, which is why it is our standard material for dovetail drawer construction.

Soft Maple

Soft Maple provides a similar appearance to hard maple with slightly lower density.
  • Smooth grain and light color
  • More cost-effective than hard maple
  • Suitable for moderate-use applications
Soft maple is often selected when a lighter-duty drawer is acceptable or when budget considerations are a priority.

White Oak

White Oak offers a tighter grain structure and a more refined appearance compared to red oak, along with improved moisture resistance.
White oak is denser and less porous, giving it added durability and stability in demanding environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility cabinetry. Its subtle grain pattern and neutral tone make it a preferred option for modern, high-end cabinetry and furniture where long-term performance and a cleaner visual profile are desired.

Red Oak

Oak is a durable hardwood recognized for its strong grain pattern and traditional appearance.
Red oak features an open, pronounced grain with warm undertones that make it a popular choice for furniture, exposed cabinetry, and projects where wood character is meant to be visible. It machines well and provides reliable strength for drawer construction, making it suitable for both residential and light commercial applications where aesthetics are a priority.

Cherry is a premium hardwood valued for its rich tone and smooth grain.
  • Warm color that deepens naturally over time
  • Fine, even texture
  • Excellent choice for furniture and high-end cabinetry
Cherry drawers are often selected for visible interiors where appearance is as important as performance.

Walnut is a top-tier hardwood chosen for its dark, refined appearance.
  • Rich brown tones with natural variation
  • Smooth grain and premium feel
  • Ideal for luxury cabinetry and furniture applications
Walnut drawer boxes are commonly used when drawers are visible and intended to complement dark interiors or statement designs

Alder offers a softer look with subtle grain variation.
  • Warm, uniform appearance
  • Lighter weight than maple or oak
  • Often used in painted or stained applications
Alder is a versatile option for decorative cabinetry and furniture projects.

In addition to our standard domestic hardwoods, Western Dovetail can source and manufacture drawer boxes using a wide range of specialty and alternative wood species upon request. This includes premium and specialty woods such as mahogany, teak, and cypress, which may be specified for unique visual character, moisture resistance, or specialty furniture and architectural applications.

We can also accommodate more rustic or cost‑conscious species such as knotty pine, ash, and similar domestic woods where visible character, grain variation, or a lighter material is desired. While availability may vary by species and market conditions, our sourcing capabilities allow us to work with nearly any wood species requested, ensuring the drawer material aligns with the design intent, performance needs, and overall project requirements.

Grading & Material Selection

All hardwoods are graded and selected based on the application. Drawer sides, which are often visible, receive higher-grade material, while fronts and backs are selected for strength and consistency. This approach balances appearance, performance, and value.

FSC® Certified Hardwood Available

Western Dovetail offers FSC® certified hardwood options, including hard maple and maple plywood, for projects that require responsible sourcing and environmental compliance.

When FSC® Certification Matters

FSC‑certified hardwood is commonly specified for:
  • Commercial and institutional projects
  • LEED® and other green building programs
  • Government or corporate sustainability requirements
  • Clients prioritizing responsible material sourcing

Performance Without Compromise

FSC certification addresses how wood is sourced, not how it performs. FSC‑certified hardwood drawer boxes from Western Dovetail are built to the same construction standards, tolerances, and quality controls as all of our drawer boxes.
Sustainability, durability, and precision can coexist — FSC® certification simply adds verified responsible sourcing to the equation.
