Western Dovetail Drawer Construction

Western Dovetail manufactures custom dovetail drawer boxes built for strength, accuracy, and long‑term performance. Every drawer is made to order in California using precision machining and proven woodworking methods that ensure a perfect fit and smooth operation for years of daily use.

Solid Wood Drawer Box Materials

Our standard drawer boxes are constructed with solid hardwood sides, most commonly 5/8" hard maple, paired with a 3/8" maple plywood bottom. All materials are milled flat and consistent before assembly to maintain tight tolerances and clean joinery.

Drawer bottoms are captured in a dado on all four sides, not nailed or stapled on. This construction method increases structural rigidity, keeps the drawer square, and provides a cleaner, more durable interior compared to surface‑mounted bottoms. Other material thicknesses, species, and custom configurations are available.

Precision Dovetail Joinery

All Western Dovetail drawers feature precision‑cut dovetail joinery, the industry benchmark for high‑quality drawer box construction. Our standard configuration uses half‑blind English dovetails, visible on the drawer sides and concealed at the front for a clean, professional appearance.

Dovetail joints mechanically lock the drawer together, resisting pulling forces over time without relying on fasteners alone. Each joint is cut accurately, assembled tight, and sanded smooth after assembly to ensure consistency and strength across every drawer.

Optional joinery styles — including through dovetails, french dovetails, custom dovetails, and box joints — are available for projects that require a different aesthetic or construction style.

Controlled Glue‑Ups & Material Handling

To improve stability and appearance, drawers under 6 inches in height are built with no glue‑ups whenever possible. Taller drawers use minimal glue‑ups only where required for strength and grain consistency. This approach reduces movement, improves durability, and results in a cleaner finished product.

Clean Edges & Professional Finishing

Standard drawer boxes receive a light radius on the top edges of the side walls for a smooth feel, while the front and back maintain a square inside edge for tight cabinet connections. Additional edge profiles are available based on installation needs.

Most drawers are finished with one coat of sealer and a satin topcoat, producing a clean, durable surface that installs easily and performs well over time. Unfinished and alternate finish options are also available.

Built to Tight Tolerances

Accuracy is critical for drawer performance. Western Dovetail drawers are manufactured to precise tolerances to ensure consistent fit and smooth operation:

  • Width: +0 / −1⁄32"
  • Height & Depth: ±1⁄16"

These tolerances help ensure reliable slide performance and easier installation across a wide range of cabinet applications.

Made for Daily Use

Western Dovetail drawer boxes are designed for kitchens, bathrooms, closets, offices, and furniture where drawers are opened and closed repeatedly under load. From dovetail joinery and captured bottoms to controlled glue‑ups and precise machining, every construction detail is chosen for durability, accuracy, and longevity.

Flat. Square. Accurate. Always On Time. That’s how Western Dovetail drawers are built.
